You’ve probably never heard about the Mamey fruit (pronounced “ma-may”), and with so many new beauty product fads to have come and gone (such as moroccan oil) you might be wondering if this is even worth a look. However, we’ve done our research and really think this is one of the most interesting and nutrient-dense oils that could actually replace your typical Vitamin C serum and facial moisturizers, and simplify your beauty routine altogether.
The Mamey sapote is a medium to large-sized fruit with an ovoid shape. It contains a large central pit, quite similar to an avocado. The fruit’s skin is almost bark-like with a sand paper texture (and color) protecting the fruit’s flesh. When ripe, the flesh is a vibrant salmon color, its texture soft and succulent with a melting quality. The flavor of the Mamey sapote is delicate yet distinctive, revealing notes of baking spices such as vanilla and nutmeg with sub-acid undertones of pumpkin, banana, pear and apricot.
Inside the large central pit is the fruit’s seed, it’s appearance and flavor likened to that of almond, which is cold pressed extracting the oil to make our Mamey Beauty Oil.
Mamey is native to Mexico and Central America where it still grows prolifically today. In other countries, the trees bark is harvested for tinder. The first Mamey sapote fruit was brought into the United States to Florida in 1887. Despite favorable trials and exceptional fruit production, only scatterings of Mamey sapote tree orchards would evolve over the next century. Currently, in the very same state, small Mamey sapote farms are under the threat of becoming endangered due to uncontrolled land development, hurricane damage and escalating land prices. As with most fruit trees, Mamey sapote is propagated by grafting, which ensures that new plants have the same characteristics as the parent, especially its fruit. This method also induces far quicker fruit bearing crops.
Mamey Sapote Oil is made from the cold pressed seed of the mamey fruit. It remains unrefined and virgin which means the oil doesn’t go through any other further processing of heating, solvent extraction, phosphate distillation, no inclusion of caustic sodas, bleaching or deodorizing like most commercially refined oils. Our oil is fresh, 100% virgin and beneficial with all the enzymes and nutrients left in it.
Mamey oil is rich in Vitamins A, B, C and E which are great for anti-aging and moisturizing the skin. It has a lovely smooth velvety texture when applied, and smells sweet like marzipan. It is rich in proteins, amino acids, fatty acids and minerals – basically great food for your skin!
Mamey oil has been found to be beneficial for the skin and scalp. In 1970 Clinical Tests at the University of California at Los Angeles have confirmed that this oil is effective in controlling hair loss caused by seborrheic dermatitis. By applying a little Mamey Seed Oil to the scalp in the morning, this helps in nourishing your hair from the root to help it look healthier.
Mamey Seed Oil can also be used prior to showering. Rub the oil all over scalp and leave on for about 15 minutes. Shampoo as usual. This helps strengthen and promote healthy hair growth from the roots. The oil is particularly useful for natural curly hair that can become dry from over styling. We highly recommend this oil for curly hair; Try using it instead of mousse. Apply to damp hair and allow hair to air dry. Also, try using it as a hot oil treatment, conditioner and detangler (especially for coily hair). Sapote restores the health of natural or chemically relaxed hair while improving manageability leaving your hair soft and luxurious.
Mamey seed oil helps stimulate follicles to encourage growth and helps nourish your hair from the root to help it look healthier.
